Ujjain
Eating Out
Ujjain suffers from a dearth of decent places to eat. Most visitors
either stick to their hotel restaurant, or opt for a plate of veg
curry, rice and chappatis in one of the cheap dhabas opposite the
railway station. Hygiene levels vary. However, better places
are mentioned below:
- Ashnoi
Located on the University Rd, this is Ujjain's nicest place to
eat, moderately priced menu is excellent pure veg, with a few
Chinese dishes thrown in for good measure.
- Chanakya
Situated on Station Rd (Subhash Marg). This is the best of several
no-frills restaurants opposite the station. Spicy, inexpensive
veg food, and chilled beer. The popular Ankur next door offers
more of the same.
- Indian Coffee House
Located in Durga Plaza on the Dewas Rd. Here, one can expect good-value
South Indian snacks and inexpensive Indian main courses.
- Nauratan Shipra Hotel
Located on the University Rd. Typical MPSTDC restaurant offering
tasty veg, Mughlai, tandoori and Chinese dishes, plus some Western
options (even fish and chips) and a wide choice of beers and spirits.
- New Raj Kumar
Located in 20 Bhaktawar Ganj, Dushera Maidan. It is a small, spotless
and unpretentious pure-veg joint, with mains averaging at Rs50.
A little difficult to find, tucked away down a suburban backstreet
off Waktahwa Marg near Surana Palace.
- White House
Situated inside the Surana Palace, 23 GDC Rd. Here one can get
a wide range of carefully prepared Indian and Chinese vegetarian
dishes at moderate prices, served indoors or on the lawn. There's
also a fast food outlet for pizza, veggie-burgers and ice cream.
