Pachmarhi

History | Getting There | Excursion | Eating Out

Location

Panchmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's such a city, it has created a name for itself as a verdant jewel and a place, where nature has found exquisite expression in innumerable enchanting ways. Forests embrace the mountains and one can hear the gentle murmur of flowing water. Though Pachmarhi has no comparison with the hill stations of the Himalayas, still it carries a charm of its own, which is unique to this place. Bristle paths lead into tranquil forest glades, trees of wild bamboo and jamun and dense Sal forests.

Panchmarhi is also an archaeological treasure house. Cave shelters in the Mahadeo hills contain an astonishing wealth of rock paintings. The bulk of these, have been placed in the 500 - 80 AD period, but the earliest paintings are an estimated 10, 000 years old.

Geographical Location
At an altitude of 3,555 feet, Panchmarhi, the summer capital of Madhya Pradesh is surrounded by the Satpura hills.

History
Panchmarhi was built on a spot discovered by Captain Forsyth in 1857 of the Bengal Lancers. The beautiful landscape of the plateau of the Satpura range, impressed him, with its tranquil forests of wild bamboo, Sal, Jamun, amla and gular trees, interspersed with deep pools, fed by the streams that ran across the lava hills. Later, the British developed Pachmarhi, as a military sanatorium and a hot weather resort.
