Tinsukia
Tinsukia District is in Upper Assam and bounded by - in East-South
by Arunachal Pradesh, In the South-west by Dibrugarh District and
in North by Dhemaji District which is separated from Tinsukia District
by the mighty river Brahmaputra.
The ancient name of Tinsukia was Bangmara which was orginally known
as Changmai Pathar. It was the capital of Muttack Kingdom. The Bangmara
city was built by King Sarbananda Singha with the help of his Minister
Gopinath Barbaruah alies Godha. The city was built in the middle
of the present Tinsukia City
Tinsukia is well connected by air, National Highway and railway.
It is only 532 KM by road from the State Capital Dispur, Assam.
The nearest Airport is at Mohanbari,Dibrugarh which is about 40
Km from Tinsukia with daily connection from Delhi/Guwahati and with
Calcutta four times in a week.
The district of Tinsukia is rich in Sericulture and Handloom activities
particularly amongst the Tribal community such as Phakyal, Tangsa,
Jemi Naga, Karbi etc. The Traditional dress of the people are unique
in nature. The "Golden Thread" Muga culture is very much
popular in this district. To encourage the people to increase the
production of Muga Yarn and fabricss, the Department of Handloom
and Textile along with the Sericulture Deptt.
