Madan Mahal
The Gond ruler Madan Shah built the Madan Mahal Fort in 1116 AD
on top of a rocky hill. The fort is very simple structure with out
any ornamentation. Since the fort dominates the skyline, it therefore,
provides a panoramic view of the Jabalpur Township and the valley
around.
Sangram Sagar and Bajnamath
The famous Gond King, Sangram Shah, between 1480-1540, built these
medieval constructions.
Rani Durgavati Memorial and Museum
One of the largest Tal in the city having historical importance
is the Rani Tal; built by the celebrated Rani Durgavati. Thus, dedicated
to the memory of the great Durgavati, it is her memorial and archeological
museum, which displays a fine collection of sculptures, inscriptions
and prehistoric relics.
Tilwara Ghat
The Tilwara Ghat locality is situated on the banks of the
Narmada where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed. This has also
been the venue of the open session of the Tripuri Congress in 1939.
This place also boasts of having an old Mahadeva (Tilwadeshwar)
temple.
Roopnath
Roopnath, 84 km from Jabalpur, is famous for a Lingam dedicated
to Shiva and placed in the cleft of a rock.
Bilhari
This place is about 14 km far from Katni. Many pieces of
ancient sculpture have been found here.
Nohta
81 km from Jabalpur, Nohta is believed to have been the capital
of the Chandela kings in the early 12th century. About 2 kms from
the village of Nohta is a Shiva temple, where a Kartik fair is held
annually. A few Jain ruins can also be seen in Nohta.
Mandla & Ramnagar
Mandla was the capital of the ancient Gond Kingdom of Garha-
Mandla early in the Christan era. The Gond Queen Rani Durgavati
came here when the Mughal forces under Asaf Khan captured her army
in 1564. The fort was built 95 kms south of Jabalpur in the 17th
century and is surrounded and protected on the three sides by the
Narmada River and with a ditch from the fourth side. It later on
passed to the Marathas and then to the British in 1818. Apart from
a few towers, the remaining part of the fort is now subsiding into
the jungle. The Gond Raja, Hirde Shah built a large palace in a
commanding site nearby in Ramnagar nearly 15 km away from this place
with a ruined three-storey palace overlooking the Narmada. From
this place, of which little remains. Kanha National Park is also
about 40 km from Mandala.
Rookhad
101 km from Nagpur and 26 km from Seoni lies Rookhad, a charming
retreat in Bison country. Rookhand is a wildlife sanctury adjacent
to the Pench National Park.
