Eating Out

A smart place to eat and to hang out in the evenings is the colonnaded dining- hall in the Sheesh Mahal hotel, which serves a good mix of veg and non-veg food. And Tandoori specials at lunch time. Alternatively, Betwa Cottages cooks up delicious Indian veg dishes (order an hour in advance) and Amar Mahal is good for mutton and chicken curries.

Betwa Tarang on the Fort Bridge near the main market is one of the most popular travelers' hang-outs, serving delicious Indian veg dishes, thalis and lassis in cool a/c comfort or alfresco on a rooftop; it opens early for breakfast. There are also a few simple dhabas in the bazaar, serving very cheap thalis, and a congenial cafe on the corner of the junction between the track to the Sheesh Mahal the main road through the bazaar, which serves great pancakes, thalis and lassis. The delicious local speciality, Orchha kalakand (milk cake), can be bought from the small stalls around the gate to the Ram Raja temple forecourt.
