Ajmer

Ajmer district is situated in the center of Rajasthan and is surrounded by Jaipur and Tonk districts in the east and Pali in the west. Nagaur district touches its north boundaries while Bhilwara district is in the south.

The district is divided into four sub-divisions viz., Ajmer, Beawar, Kekri and Kishangarh. The sub-divisions are further divided into six tehsils namely Ajmer, Beawar, Nasirabad, Kekri, Kishangarh and Sarwar and eight panchayat samitis.

Excursion

Dargah
The Dargah is the Tomb of a Sufi saint, Khwaja Muinud - din Chishti, who came to Ajmer from Persia in 1192. Construction of the shrine was completed by Humayun and the gate was added by the Nizam of Hyderabad. Akbar used to make the piligrimage to the Dargah from Agra once a year. The saint's tomb is in the centre of the second court. It has a marble dome and the actual tomb inside is surrounded by a silver platform. The tomb attaracts hundred of thousands of piligrims every year on the anniversary of the lunar calendar.

Akbar Palace
Back in the city, near the railway station, this fort was built by Akbar in 1570 and today houses the Ajmer Museum. The collection has some fine sculpture and a rather poor collection of Moghul and Rajput armour. The museum is closed on Friday and charges a small admission fee.

Taragarh
Three km and a steep one and half hour climb beyond the mosque in Adhai - din - ka - jhonpra, Taragarh, or 'Star Fort' commands an excellent view over the city. The fort was the site of much military activity during Moghul times and was later used as a sansation by the British.

Taragarhor the 'Star Fort' is situated three kilometers and a steep 1 and a half hour climb beyond the Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra Mosque. As it is situated on a height, it commands a spectecular view over the city. It was built by Ajaipal Chauhan, the town's founder. The fort was the site of much military activities during Mughal times and was later used as a sanatorium by the British.

Nasiyan Temple
The 'Red Temple' on Prithviraj Marg is a Jain Temple built last century. Its double - storey hall contains a series of large, gilt wooden figures from Jain mythology which depict the Jain concept of the ancient world. It's certainly worth a visit.

Situated in the center of the town is a beautiful red Jain temple (Digambar), known as Nasiyan. This temple was built in 1865 and is also famous by the name Golden Temple, due to tis amazing and unique display. The main double storeyed hall is exceptionally beautiful with gold and silver decorations. Within the temple there is a splendid display of wooden gilt representations, glass engravings and paintings describing the Jain faith about the creation of the world.

Pushkar Lake (11 Km)
This lake is situated at the edge of the desert and surrounded by the hills from three sides.This lake get apart from ajmer by the snake mountain range called locally as ' Nag Parvat'.

According to the legend Pushkar was originated when lord Bhramha was looking for a peaceful place for 'Yagya'. It is said that a Lotus flower slipped from his hand and fell down on this hill,where the Pushkar Lake derived. Therefore the Bhramha temple situated here, is a famous pilgrimage for Hindus. On this mountain, the Panchkund and the cave of the saint Agastya are located.

Shopping
Shopping is fun in Ajmer. One can go on a buying spree for various kinds of items representing Rajasthani culture and style, Silver and gold ornaments, jewellery, tie & dye textiles, embroidered Jodhpuri shoes (Mojari) are some of the specialities available on the shelf.

Getting There
By Road
National Highway Number 8 running between Delhi and Mumbai passes through the district and covers a distance of about 147 kms., and the route also provides direct road link from Beawar to Delhi via Jaipur and Ajmer and to Ahmedabad via Udaipur. The length of the State highway roads is 340 kms., major district road is 170 kms., and other roads are 797 kms. The total road length was 2901 kms., as on 31 March 2000.

By Rail
Delhi-Ahmedabad (via Ringas) railway line is a meter gauge line passing through the Ajmer district. Ajmer, Kishangarh, Beawar towns of the district are the important stations of thei meter gauge line. Conversion of this meter gauge into broad gauge is under progress in the district. The distict is also directly linked with Ratlam and Indore by meter gauge. Important railway stations on Ajmer-Khandwa rail line are Ajmer, Nasirabad and Bijaynagar. The total railway lines is 2261 Kms.
