Wildlife in Chattisgarh

Indravati National Park
This park was established in 1978 in Bastar district on the banks of river Indravati, after which is named. It is spread over and area of 1258 sq km away from the park which also serves as the railhead. The nearest air port is Rai pur 486km away.

The park comprises tropical deciduous forest with teak, amaltas, anjan, arjun, amlabaheda and palas. There is profuse growth of bamboos also. The deep forests are interspersed with grasslands and the trees are covered with climbers. It is an ideal habitat for diverse fauna. The common mammals found in the park are chital, sambar, chausingha, blue bull, black buck, chinkara, barking deer, swamp deer, wild buffalo, sloth bear and wild boar. Tiger, leopard, wolf, jackal, hyena and python are important carnivora.

The best months for visiting the park are February and march.

Udanti Sanctuary
The Udanti Sanctuary occupies the South-Eastern portion of Gariaband Tehsil of Raipur District and adjoins Orissa State in Eastern side. It covers an area of 247.59 Sq. Kms. The Sanctuary is principally created to protect the wild buffaloes. The other species are also abundant in the area.

How to reach
By Air : The nearest Railway Station is Rajim (115 Kms) on Raipur-Rajim Narrow Gauge of S.E. Railway. The main Station is Raipur (170 Kms.) on Bombay-Howrah main line.Indian wolf
By Road : The principal approach Road is Raipur-Rajim-Gariaband-Mainpur-Deobhog PWD all weather road.

Sanjay National Park
Set up in the year1981. The park is spread over an area of 1938sq.km in the districts of Sidhi and Sarguja. The nearest town Sidhi is 60km away from the park, railhead Jora 20km away and airport Khafuraho 270km away. The fauna found in the park are leopard, Indian wolf, Chinkara, Sambhar, nilgai etc.

November to June are the best months for visiting the park.

Kangar Valley National Park
This park was set up in the year1982 in Bastar district covering an area of 200sq.km. The nearest town is Jagdalpur at a distance of 30km which is also the railhead for visiting the park. The nearest airport is Raipur at a distance of 30km which is also the railhead for visiting the park. The nearest airport is Raipur at a distance of 330km from the park. The fauna of the park consist of leopard, tiger, carcal, bison, chausingha, wolf, crocodile and python.

March to June is the best period for visiting the park.

Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary
Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1974 Under Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and Biogeographical province 4.8.4 (Indus-Ganges Monsoon Forest). The Sanctuary is spread in area about 553 sq km. mainly undulating and hilly terrain. Altitude ranges from 327-736m.. Moist peninsular sal forest. The dominant species is sal Shorea robusta mixed with Terminalia, Anogeossis, Pterocarpus, bamboo and others are the main vegetation.

Tiger Panthera tigris, leopard. pardus, Jackal Canis aureus, sloth bear Melursus ursinus, Indian wild dog Cuon alpinus, chital Axis axis, sambar Cervus unicolor, nilgai Boselaphus tragocamelus, gaur Bos gaurus, muntjac Muntiacus muntjak, wild boar Sus scrofa and others. The main considerable interruption is Grazing of cattle and collection of minor forest produce by the villagers.

Achanakmar WBlackbuck ildlife Sanctuary
Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1975 Under Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and biogeographical province 4.8.4 (Indus-Ganges Monsoon Forest). Moreover the area of the sanctuary is 551.55-sq.km mainly a hilly country. Altitude ranges from 200-1000m.Mainly tropical sal forests with other species at higher altitudes are the vegetation of this region.

Leopard, Gaur, Chital, Wild Bear, Tiger Panthera tigris, leopard, stripped Hyaena, Jackal Canis aureus, sloth bear Melursus ursinus, Indian wild dog Cuon alpinus, chital, sambar Cervus unicolor, nilgai Boselaphus tragocamelus, four-horned Antelope Tetracerus quadricornis, chinkara (mountain gazelle) Gazella gazella, Blackbuck Antilope cervicapra, munyjac Muntiacus muntjak, wild boar Sus scrofa and others.
