Ranikhet
Situated at 1829 mtrs. This sylvan retreat offers an interesting
mix of hill and military cultures. According to legend, a queen,
in the course of a journey came here and was so enchanted by it's
beauty that she settled down here. Ranikhet has forests of oak and
pine, and is a fine place to enjoy a panoramic view of the Himalayas,
from the Bhagirathi peaks in the west to Nanda Kot in the east.
It is an ideal holiday spot for nature lovers, and its main attractions,
apart from its natural beauty, are a golf course, the orchards of
Chaubatia and the Jhoola Devi Temple.
Excursion
Jhoola Devi Temple
This secluded temple dedicated to Durga has beautiful bells, echoes
of which can be heard from some distance. Nearby is a temple of
Lord Rama.
Chaubatia
Chaubatia is a vantage point set amidst gardens. The Government
Fruit Research center is located here. On a clear morning a 300
Km wide view of the snow - clad Himalayan peaks can be seen clearly
from Chaubatia, 10 Km from Ranikhet on a motorable road. The Nanda
Devi, Trisul, Nanda Ghunti and Nilkanth peaks are very clear. Bhaludam,
3 Km from here, has an artificial lake.
Upat and Kalika
Situated on the road to Almora, Upat has a 9 - hole golf course,
while Kalika is famous for its Kali Temple and forest nursery.
Majkhali
13 km. A vantage point on the road to Almora.
Kherna
35 Km. A scenic place offering a fine view of the Himalayas. It
has lush orchards and is also known for its herbal and medicinal
plants. It is an ideal place for a peaceful holiday.
Dwarahat
37 Km. Believed to be the seat of the ancient Katyuri dynasty, the
town has a cluster of old temples divided into eight distinct groups.
Dunagiri
53 km. Famous for its temple dedicated to Durga Devi. The temple
has an inscription dating back to 1181 A.D.
