Matheran is famous for its train, which runs from Neral to Matheran. This small train covers the distance of 21 kms in 2-2 1/2 hrs. Journey through this train is really enjoyable. The train goes through deep forest and one can see the beauty of jungle. Matheran is truly a unique place as it is 'Pollution Free Town'. No vehicles are allowed here and hence total area is free from pollution. You can either walk the town or travel on the back of horses.
The climate of Matheran is very cool. The most unforgettable things about Matheran are deep forest and the waterfalls nearby, especially in rainy season. The beauty of the hill station gets doubled in monsoon. Matheran is truly 'The Best Hill Station in Maharashtra. There are many places to see in Matheran.
Matheran is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 800 m. In shady trees, and unpolluted air the journey to this hilltop could be through an exciting two hour ascent in a toy train, with food and drink vendors and monkeys jumping on and off, or through a tough 11 km. road hike passing from dense forests. Matheran's cliffs with incredibly heights create stunning points.
The main bazaar offers a variety of articles such as cane and leather articles, hats, chappals and the sweet specialty - Chikki! Vehicles of any kind are not permitted in the town, which makes it a quiet and peaceful place.

in Matheran the modes of transport in Martheran are limited to horses

Matheran is situated in the Matheran range of sahyadris at a height
of 2516 feet. To reach Matheran one has to first reach Neral. Neral
is well connected to Mumbai by rail and road. From Neral, Matheran
can be reached by a narrow gauge railway or by taxies. Railway function
normally in summer and winter season. Taxies leave you at Dasturi
Naka, where after paying tax you can proceed towards Bazarpeth.
Train directly takes you to the bazarpeth. One can even reach Matheran
by foot.
